First, let me say, I never read the book, and still haven’t, but I understand the movie has really next to nothing to do with it, except for the edible weather.
That said, I enjoyed this, and my seven-year-old adored it.
It has unusually good plotting for a kid’s action flick, fine voice acting, good gags, both sight and otherwise, and a greater than usual amount of suspense at the end. I was expecting the commentary on over-eating and there’s the usual Be True to Yourself and Your Parents Really Do Love You messages, but I DIDN’T expect commentary on immigration, environmentalism and the beauty culture. It also has one of the best on-screen portrayals of a geek I’ve ever seen. I KNEW this guy.
Amusing light fare if you’re seeing seeing your cartoons on your own these days. It’s also a painless way to spend a rainy afternoon with the kids if you need to get them out of the house, although you will have to sit through the trailer for The Princess and the Frog again.
