Cathy's BookA lot of the best science fiction is currently in the YA section.  One of the best examples is CATHY’S BOOK by Sean Stewart.  Stewart is a fantastic writer.  He can spin a scene like no one else and his fantasy novels are unique, but I’d always felt he was a bit on the weak side as a plotter.

CATHY’S BOOK with its shorter length was absolutely perfect for Stewart.  The conceit it that the book is the diary of a young woman who is dating an older man.  Turns out he’s even older than she thought.  And NO he’s not a vampire.  Or a werewolf.  What he is, is very different, very complex and very intriguing.

The book itself is a gorgeous object filled with these fantastic ballpoint pen sketches, which gives it a real feeling of belonging to an aspiring artist.

I can’t recommend the original enough, and I’ve been waiting, and waiting and WAITING for the sequel.

Cathy's RingYesterday, I found it on the shelf;  CAHTY’S RING.  Snatched it up immediately.  Can’t wait to dive in.  There will be more after I’m done.

  1. I’ve never heard of Stewart or his books and it sounds like I’m really missing out. I’ll have to pick up Cathy’s Book and see how it sits with me. Thanks for the recommendation!
