A lot of the best science fiction is currently in the YA section. One of the best examples is CATHY’S BOOK by Sean Stewart. Stewart is a fantastic writer. He can spin a scene like no one else and his fantasy novels are unique, but I’d always felt he was a bit on the weak side as a plotter.
CATHY’S BOOK with its shorter length was absolutely perfect for Stewart. The conceit it that the book is the diary of a young woman who is dating an older man. Turns out he’s even older than she thought. And NO he’s not a vampire. Or a werewolf. What he is, is very different, very complex and very intriguing.
The book itself is a gorgeous object filled with these fantastic ballpoint pen sketches, which gives it a real feeling of belonging to an aspiring artist.
I can’t recommend the original enough, and I’ve been waiting, and waiting and WAITING for the sequel.
Yesterday, I found it on the shelf; CAHTY’S RING. Snatched it up immediately. Can’t wait to dive in. There will be more after I’m done.
